Circulation and Overdue Policies

Circulation Policy

We have recently "loosened the reins" with our circulation policy.  We recognized that not allowing children to check out additional books when they would forget their book occasionally, contradicted our goal of cultivating and fostering a love of reading among our students.  At the same time, we recognize the necessity of having some sort of formal policy in place.

Kindergarten

Students can check out one book per week, with a maximum of 3 books checked out at one time.  Books have a 1 week circulation period.

1st Grade

Students can check out up to 2 books per week, with a maximum of 4 books checked out at one time.  Books have a 1 week circulation period.

2nd and 3rd grade

Students can check out up to 3 books per week, with a maximum of 5 books checked out at one time.  Books have a 1 week circulation period.

4th and 5th grade

Students can check out up to 3 books per week, with a maximum of 5 books checked out at one time.  Books have a 2 week circulation period.

Additional Information

Renewals are always permitted unless there is a hold on that title.  Books should be present to renew, but we are flexible.

The library is open in the morning for book circulation from 8:45 - 9:00.  All forgotten book exchanges should take place during this time.  This is in an effort to reduce classroom disruptions.  Please check with your classroom teacher for their policy on this issue as each teacher handles it differently.

Lost or damaged book should be replaced or paid for.  Please contact Mrs. McDermott if you have a lost or damaged book.

There are no fines on overdue books.

Summer Book Exchange
At Cherry Avenue we allow students to check out books during the summer months.  Summer check out is optional.  It is simply another way to provide access to books and it is novelity for the children all in an attempt to keep them excited about reading.  Continuing to read over the summer months is very important!
